The Multiple Lives of African Print Cloths: Capulana and Tsigan

Mozambican entrepreneur Wacy Zacarias and MIT Professor of Anthropology and African Studies M. Amah Edoh will share their expertise about the complex meaning, design, and multinational history of African print cloths. Zacarias started her first company, Woogui, in 2008 as an ethical accessories and tailored shirt brand. Later she co-founded Karingana Wa Karingana, which is committed to creating sustainable, authentic, and bespoke African textiles. M. Amah Edoh’s work focuses on the production of knowledge about Africa, and in particular on how “Africa” as a category of thought is produced, through material practices across African and non-African locations. Her current book project, Our Grandmothers’ Cloth: Materiality, Class, and Global Membership in the Age of “The New Africa,” traces the trajectory of Dutch Wax cloth between the Netherlands and Togo.
This talk is held in conjunction with the exhibition Joana Vasconcelos: Valkyrie Mumbet, on view at the MassArt Art Museum (MAAM) through August 2, 2020.
